The Dog Owner: Beth Teliho, an award-winning author, artist, and blogger who lives in Texas with her husband, two adventurous sons, and a veritable menagerie of pets. She laughs at inappropriate jokes and likes spicy food and margaritas more than just about anything. She aspires to one day live in a tree house with a cat. Or ten.

 

Dog type and Name:

Mixed breed. Milo

Q: Why did you choose this dog? He chose me; I had no choice in the matter. My mother was on the board of an animal welfare group where she lived. I went to visit her and her husband, and they were fostering a dog that had been found shot in the leg. They had paid for his surgery and were nurturing him back to health. I looked at his sweet face and thought, “I love him. He must be mine.” Two months later, when he was fully recovered, he came to live with us.

  

Q: Do you talk to your dog? If so, what do you talk about? Yes! I do, all the time. I chat with him during the day. I ask him questions, like, “Should we have lunch now?” or “Is the cat chasing you again?”

 

 

Q: If he could talk to you, what would he say? “Can you get this cat away from me, and while you’re at it, can I have another bone?” He would also ask for a walk seven hundred times a day.

 Q: What kind of paranormal secret ability would your dog have? Milo would definitely be able to teleport to wherever I am, whether that’s on the other side of a closed door or in some other location.

 

Q: If your dog had a job or career, what would he be doing? He’d work at a pizza place because his favorite thing in the world is pizza crust!

 

 

Q: What lesson in life has your dog taught you? You think you know what kind of pet you’d want, but it can’t always be planned ahead! I always thought of myself as a cat person. I was not in the market for a dog. But sometimes you just fall in love with their sweet little souls, and the breed or species doesn’t matter.

 

Q: How does your dog inspire you? His patience (remember, I have two wild ‘n crazy sons and a dog-stalking cat), resilience, and unflappable love for our family inspire me daily.

 

 

Q: Where is your dog’s favorite place to go with you? He loves to go for rides in the car, and he will walk with me anywhere.

 

 

Q: Who or what does your dog find the most interesting?  Belly rubs, rawhide bones, furry chew toys, and long walks. He loves anyone who will love him back.

 

 

Q: What is the most annoying thing other dog owners do? I’m probably going to offend someone, but it grosses me out when people let their dogs a) lick dishes, b) lick their owners lips. Tiny dogs that ride in purses are irrationally annoying to me too.

 

Q:  What does being a responsible dog owner mean to you? Taking care of ALL their needs, not just the ones that are convenient, and making sure they are exercised. So many behavioral issues are caused by lack of exercise. Some people get active dogs but never consider how much time and energy they’ll have to put into the health and well being of their pet. It drives me crazy.

 

Q:  Do you ever dress up your dog? If so, as what? We’ve dressed him up a few times at Halloween. Once as a bumblebee. Once as a referee.

 

Q:  How has your dog changed your life? I can’t say that he’s changed my life, but he’s certainly added to it on so many levels. He makes me laugh. I feel good that we rescued him. He forces me to exercise and get outdoors. He’s a part of our family, loved by all. He’s my little buddy.

 

 

Q:  Does your dog have a philosophy of life? “Eat pizza, seek belly rubs, and walk far.”

 

 

Q:  I love my dog because he is adorable and sweet and part of our family!

 

Q:  Have you ever made dog treats for your dog? If so, please share your recipe. Can’t say that I have!
